More Than Just Hockey

Recently Bryan Pandolfo, grandson of one of Micro Ice’s original founders had the opportunity to be the honory bat boy for the Red Sox because of his work with Autism Awareness. Below is the message written by Dick about his grandson’s experience:

AUTISM AWARENESS DAY WITH THE RED SOX.

“In choosing the Islanders as a hockey organization for my grandson to play hockey as a six year old, I was struck by the fact that this program was going to afford Bryan much more than learning hockey skills. In addition to the great hockey training in a college setting, he has learned the importance of providing for those in most need. During the Autism Fund raising period in the Fall, he went house to house and also parked himself in front of a Dunkin Donuts raising money for the Autism walk. He was thrilled that he raised money through his own efforts. He was recently given the opportunity along with Kelsey Giordano, a 12 yr old female Islander player, to be the honorary batboy and bat girl at the Red Sox/Mariners baseball game on Saturday May 27th . They both were a part of the Autism Awareness Recognition ceremony and they were introduced to the Red Sox fans. For two hours prior to the game, they along with some autistic teens, were allowed on the field to get autographs and watch batting practice for both teams. Later, they were invited into the Red Sox dugout and got autographs from many players including Chris Sale. Dennis Eckersley even stopped by for a picture. Bryans take away from this fantastic Autism Awareness experience was how grateful he was to have participated in an event that recognizes those who need our assistance. This experience allowed him to interact further with autistic individuals in a fun filled day with the Red Sox. Kelsey and Bryan learned how important purpose is in life, that is to be compassionate ,useful and responsible as they make a difference in another’s life. The Autism experience has given them both a chance to matter and count in supporting individuals with Autism. They will remember this opportunity to participate in Autism Awareness at Fenway park long after they finish there hockey career with the Islanders. Bryan Pandolfo who is from North Andover is an 11 year old Pewee playing on the Gaffney/Roderick team in the Fall. Kelsey Giordano is from Billerica and will be playing on the Under 12 major1 girls team.”

Great work Bryan!
